List of Ways to Break 3 or More Way Tie in the PBA

A lot of PBA fans are wondering how to compute the quotient or point differential when 3 teams or even 4 teams are tied with the same win-loss record in the team standings. According to the official website of the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association), there are 3 ways to break this tie scenarios. Please refer to the list below.

List of Ways to Break 3 or More Way Tie in the PBA

Given:
→ A wins over B with the score of 100-88
→ B wins over C with the score of 98-89
→ C wins over A with the score of 87-80

Note: This assumes that the 3 teams above all have the same win-loss records.

1st Way: Using Point Differential (PD)
Team A:
A 100 - 88 B
A 80 - 87 C
PD = (100-88)+(80-87) = 12 + (-7) = +5
PD = +5

Team B:
B 98 - 89 C
B 88 - 100 A
PD = (98-89)+(88-100) = 9 + (-12)
PD = -3

Team C:
C 89 - 98 B
C 87 - 80 A
PD = (89-98)+(87-80) = -9 + (+7)
PD = -2

Therefore: A (1st), C (2nd), and B (3rd)

2nd Way: Using Quotient System (QS)
Team A:
A 100 - 88 B

A 80 - 87 C
QS = (100+80) / (88+87) = 180 / 175
QS = 1.028571428571429

Team B:
B 98 - 89 C
B 88 - 100 A
QS = (98+88) / (89+100) = 186 / 189
QS = 0.9841269841269841

Team C:
C 89 - 98 B
C 87 - 80 A
QS = (89+87) / (98+80) = 176 / 178
QS = 0.9887640449438202

Therefore: A (1st), C (2nd), and B (3rd) same results

3rd and LAST WAY:
If using the Point Differential and Quotient system still brought up a TIE. A toss coin will be held to break the tie. Although, this scenario happens very rare.
